The Lurgan Lectures: Arctic Ireland : The Great Frost and Forgotten Famine of 1740/41

The fourth lecture of our 2021/2022 lecture series, exploring aspects of Lurgan’s 18th century, took place on Monday 23rd May 2022 at Brownlow House. The talk, entitled ‘Arctic Ireland: The extraordinary story of the Great Frost and Forgotten Famine of 1740-41′, was given by David Dickson, Professor of Modern History at Trinity College Dublin.

In his presentation Professor Dickson shed light on the circumstances of the 1740-1741 famine, brought about by a series of freak climatic events, and the devastating impact which it had on Lurgan town and Ireland as a whole.
