27 September 2024: Surveying Vernacular Buildings: an introduction
Surveying Vernacular Buildings: an introduction
On Friday 27 September 2024 volunteers joined Dr Colm Donnelly from the Centre of Community Archaeology (CCA) at Queen’s University Belfast for this practical course which provided an introduction to ‘reading’, understanding and surveying vernacular buildings.
During the day participants learned about vernacular building construction and how to draw a scaled plan of such buildings. The survey focused on a vernacular cottage, dating to the 1800s, located outside Loughgall on the Ballygasson Road. Like a lot of such buildings, the cottage is in poor shape but this survey has ensured that a permanent record of it has been created before the building further deteriorates.
This event was being held as part of the CCA’S Community Archaeology Programme, supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
