Public Lecture: ‘Putting Migration into Lurgan History’ by Dr Patrick Fitzgerald

Date: 18 January 2023

Venue: Brownlow House

Start Time: 7.30pm

Join us and the Friends of Shankill Graveyard for this special talk which will examine the migration patterns of emigrants from Lurgan and the wider County of Armagh from the 1800s through to the 1900, which will be given by Dr Patrick Fitzgerald of the Mellon Centre for Migration Studies and will take place at Brownlow House.

The presentation will provide an insight into the reasons why people chose to leave the town, the influences behind their choice of destination and how this changed over time, and the stories and legacy of those who made the journey whether to Britain, America, Canada, Australia or New Zealand or elsewhere.

This talk will act as an introductory session to an online Zoom genealogy course which will help you get to grips with the archives and genealogical sources required to research ancestors from Lurgan and Armagh who emigrated to America, Canada, Australia and Britain; providing you with the necessary information and skills to further explore your family history and help you find your elusive emigrant ancestors. This course will commence on Wednesday 25 January. To find out more or to book a place go to:
