16 June – 4 July 2025: Kilmocholmóg Community Archaeology Dig
Over 450 volunteer places were taken up as the community joined the Craigavon Historical Society and the archaeologists of the Northern Archaeological Consultancy to help them excavate the ancient prehistoric and medieval site of Kilmocholmóg , located just off the Kilmore Road, Lurgan. as we look for the remains of an early medieval church which is said to have stood here over 1000 years ago!
Taking place over three weeks (Monday 16 June to Friday 4 July 2025), the dig successfully confirmed that Kilmocholmóg was an early medieval Christian church site (AD 450-1200), while also uncovering evidence of earlier Neolithic/Bronze Age occupation too!
A talk on the final results of the dig will follow later in the year, once all the post-excavation analysis has been completed. Keep an eye on our page for further details.
This archaeological investigation was funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and organised by the Craigavon Historical Society as part of their ‘Pagans, Saints and Birdmen: Rediscovering Our Sacred Landscapes’ project.
